RECOMMENDED ACTION (Motion):

Staff recommends the Commission discuss the candidates who were interviewed and vote on a final candidate for appointment.

 

BACKGROUND:

On March 5 & 6, 2019, the City Commission interviewed nine candidates for the vacant City Commission Position No. 2 seat. Now it's time for discussion and to gain a consensus to appoint one individual candidate to fill the vacancy.  Chapter III, Section 32 of the City Charter requires that vacant elective offices be filled by appointment, and a majority vote of the Commission is required to validate the appointment. 

 

The applicable Charter provision is provided below:

Section 32 - Filling of Vacancies

Vacant elective offices in the City shall be filled by appointment. A majority vote of the Commission shall be required to validate the appointment. The appointee’s term of office shall begin immediately upon his [her] appointment and shall continue until the next general election and until a successor is duly elected and qualified to complete the unexpired or new term of office as applicable. During the temporary disability of any officer or during his [her] absence temporarily from the city for any cause, his [her] office may be filled pro tem in the manner provided for filling vacancies in office permanently.
