Process for Appointing Commission Position No. 2

RECOMMENDED ACTION (Motion):
Staff recommends the City Commission discuss the process and length of time for accepting applications for the vacancy on the City Commission.
BACKGROUND:
Effective January 18, 2019, Commissioner Nancy Ide resigned from position number 2 on the City Commission. There are two years remaining on the term for this position. The City Charter Chapter VII - Vacancies in Office, Section 32 - Filling of Vacancies, states in part:
Vacant elective offices in the City shall be filled by appointment. A majority vote of the Commission shall be required to validate the appointment. The appointee's term of office shall begin immediately upon his/her appointment and shall continue until the next general election and until a successor is duly elected and qualified to complete the unexpired or new term of office as applicable.
When the City has had Commission vacancies in the past, this is the process that has been used to fill that position.
February 4th - March 4th Advertisement of vacancy
March 4th, 5:00 p.m. Deadline to submit application materials
March 14th Interview applicants and discussion
(Special City Commission meeting held)
March 20th Vote on appointment
April 3rd Oath of Office for newly appointed Commissioner
