Information Technology (Goal 2)

Body

RECOMMENDED ACTION (Motion):

Staff recommends that the Commission support the creation of a strategic plan for the short-term and long-term Information Technology Infrastructure improvements and management needs to ensure the viability and security of the City's system.

BACKGROUND:

Goal 2: Address Critical Facility Needs

Information Technology

* Complete a strategic plan for short-term and long-term Information Technology

infrastructure improvements and management needs to ensure the viability and security

of the City's system.

The City continues to make progress in making the necessary investments in the IT infrastructure necessary to maintain and expand the services that we provide.  As the City continues to expand facilities, increase services provided on-line and continue to rely on technology to promote, store and distribute information, it is necessary to ensure that the short-term and long-term strategy to invest, replace and purchase hardware, software and support resources meets the needs of the community, all departments and keeps pace with ever changing advancements in technology. With the expanding reliance on IT to provide basic services, it is necessary to strategically approach significant investments in the city's IT infrastructure, such as storage, network design, system connectivity, redundancy, disaster recovery and network security.

A short-term and long-term information technology strategic plan will allow staff the opportunity to perform a thorough evaluation of the existing system and determine the best strategy to move forward with investments of the limited funds that are available to ensure that the system continues to operate as needed.
