Title

Consider Appointment of Nancy Ide to fill the Current Vacancy on the City Commission

Body

RECOMMENDED ACTION (Motion):

The City Commission should consider appointing Nancy Ide, who is running unopposed on the November 8, 2016 ballot for City Commission, to fill the vacant Position Number 3.

BACKGROUND:

At the June 15, 2016 City Commission meeting Commissioner Carol Pauli resigned from Position Number 3 on the Commission.  Section 32 of the Oregon City Charter provides the process for the Commission to fill a vacancy:

Section 32: Filling of Vacancies.

Vacant elective offices in the City shall be filled by appointment.  A majority vote of the Commission shall be required to validate the appointment.  The appointee’s term of office shall begin immediately upon his (her) appointment and shall continue until the next general election and until a successor is duly elected and qualified to complete the unexpired or new term of office as applicable.  During the temporary disability of any officer or during his (her) absence temporarily from the city for any cause, his (her) office may be filled pro-tem in the manner provided for filling vacancies in office permanently.

The City Commission had previously discussed the possibility of appointing a candidate running unopposed in the November 8, 2016 election to fill the existing vacancy on the City Commission and complete the remainder of the term for Position Number 3. The filing deadline to run for a City Commission position has closed and Nancy Ide will be running unopposed for a City Commission position at the November 8, 2016 election.
