RECOMMENDED ACTION (Motion):

BACKGROUND:

The library was completely out of the Carnegie portion of the building prior to the scheduled date of July 13, 2016, thus allowing P&C Construction to begin remodelling work. The first major change was tearing out the strip lighting in the main reading room. This alone made a huge improvement. Most of the work, however, has happened in the basement. The carpet and ceiling of the former children's area have been completely removed. The mechanical equipment has been removed. The steps and ramp have been removed and new stairs to the new staff entry and a new ramp to the new addition from the front of the Carnegie are under construction. The new roof is almost complete.

Meanwhile, in the new addition, there is a long puchlist of things yet to complete. In addition, the playground is still closed as the planters must have concrete edges covered before they are safe.

While we are definitely ready to not be a construction site, that's not the case. There is still a lot of noise and vibration from the heavy equipment. However, having differnt parts of the project become available in phases is not all bad. It does allow staff time to absorb all the changes a bit more slowly and considering how much change we are undergoing, that is helpful.

Since we opened in the new building, we have received a lot of positive comments. Most of our negative comments have come from the fact that we are not finished and therefore, it is difficult to see entrances, etc. We have put up signs and are trying to respond, but on top of everything our phones went out, thus making it difficult to communicate with our patrons. It's a process and we are working very hard.
