Title
Interruption of Washington Street Bike Lane at 12th Street - INFORMATION

Body
BACKGROUND:
Curb extensions are located at the NW and SW corners of the intersection of Washington Street and 12th Street.  While they do inhibit the Washington Street southbound bike lane from a clear unobstructed lane just before the intersection through and after the intersection (see graphic), it is believed that the Washington Street design team made the design decision as a compromise to balance the needs of the intersection including:
1)      providing adequate turning radius for vehicles
2)      transitioning elevation changes and ADA ramps
3)      matching with existing conditions
4)      helping alleviate pedestrian crossing concerns
5)      helping alleviate the sight distance challenges from 13th to Washington

While it won't totally solve the problem, the City could install a "bike lane ends" sign to increase awareness of the conditions.  Removal of the curb extensions is a costly project and would not be something City staff could support without a completely redesigned and signalized intersection.
