Title
Resolution No. 18-45, Naming Tyrone S. Woods Memorial Park
Body
RECOMMENDED ACTION (Motion):
Staff recommends the City Commission adopt Resolution No. 18-45, naming Tyrone S. Woods Memorial Park.
BACKGROUND:
Per City policy for naming or changing names of parks, an ad-hoc naming committee was created including the Parks and Recreation Director, two members of PRAC and the staff liaison to the CIC. Sub-committee members include Community Services Director Phil Lewis, PRAC member Shawn Dachtler, PRAC member Mike Mitchell, and Senior Planner/CIC Staff Liaison Christina Robertson-Gardiner. Committee members also identified additional members to be added to the committee including a representative of the Caufield Neighborhood Association and a representative of the City Commission. Tori Skipper was selected by the neighborhood association to serve as their representative and Commissioner Brian Shaw was selected to serve as a representative of the City Commission.
The first naming committee meeting took place on March 19, 2018. Committee members reviewed the naming policy and discussed possible approaches to the naming process. A general approach and timeline were agreed upon. A public process to suggest possible names of the new park would be solicited during the months of April and May 2018 and then narrowed to a list of top 4 or 5 choices to go back out for a public vote during the months of August and September 2018.
A second naming committee meeting took place on July 17, 2018. The committee narrowed the 404 public suggestions down to a top four to move forward to a public vote. The names selected were:
• Caufield Creek Park
• Tyrone S. Woods Memorial Park
• Wacheno Park
• Waldo Caufield Memorial Park
During the months of August and September, 8,572 public votes were received. Naming committee members met for a third and final meeting on October 10, 2018 to review the votes and make a decision on a formal recommendation to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee. At the conclusion of the meeting, it was determined to recommend the new name of “Tyrone S. Woods Memorial Park”.
Naming committee members presented the Tyrone S. Woods Memorial Park recommendation at the October 25, 2018 PRAC meeting for consideration. PRAC members unanimously voted to move forward the nomination for City Commission consideration.
